Abberton won their first tournament of the season on Friday (8th August) when they took on Copford in a four team challenge at The Brow. Each club provided two teams, and all four teams then played each other in a round robin format with two points being awarded for a win; with all the teams looking capable of beating each other it was going to be important to score as many runs as possible in case of a tie. And so it proved…
…although unfortunately not for Abberton B, who lost all of the games they played.
Their matches were notable however for the debut of five year old Jamie Calladine, son of club captain Shaun, who finished as his side’s highest wicket taker and threw himself around brilliantly in the field. Meg again led the team really well, making sure that everyone got a game, and with Will living up to his "I only perform under pressure and when there’s a crowd"boast by finishing as the highest run scorer there were many positives to be taken from a fourth place finish.
All the other teams won two games and lost one, and so it was down to aggregate runs to determine the winner. Copford B (159) edged out Copford A (157) into second place by two runs and so it was Abberton A who won the event with an aggregate score of 183. Everyone made telling contributions and all of the batsmen scored enough runs to have to retire, but special mention should go to Gus, Henry and Jacob who each scored 30 runs in two innings and also Josh E who took a wicket in each of his overs and played superbly.
Abberton now entertain Mersea in a similar challenge in two week’s time before the fiercely contested and much anticipated Kids v Adults end of season match on 4th September.
